Structural steel detailing involves the creation of highly
detailed drawings for steel manufacturers, fabricators and erectors, including
plans, estimates, reports and drawing that assist them in their jobs.  A lot of different varieties of steel members
are included in structural steel detailing, including steel handrails, columns,
braces, trusses, metal decking, stairs, beams and even stairs.

And so, structural steel detailing is very important in a
lot of different industries like plants, building construction, ship building,
marine, naval construction, and building construction among others.  Anything that is big enough to need
structural steel will have to get structural steel detailing work.  Further, structural steel detailing is an
easy way to integrate the inputs of fabricators, architects, engineers and
other professionals.  Because detailers
are not responsible for the integrity and structure of steel members,
professionals like architects and structural engineers will have to approve any
structural steel detailing drawings before it is used.

Structural steel detailing drawings usually fall under two
types of drawings: erection drawings and shop drawings.  Erection drawings show steel erectors how to
put up manufactured steel members, and these usually includes the how-tos as
well as where to put it.  These also
include all the needed processes and materials like bolting, welding and
putting in wedge anchors.

Shop drawings, on the other hand, are used to enumerate the
various necessities for making each steel member and are primarily used by
fabricators to make steel members.
Structural steel detailing often has information on dimensions, sizes,
specifications, needed materials, and other relevant information.

That is why various institutions, among them the American
Institute of Steel Construction, have set specific standards for structural
steel detailing.  It needs to be done
with utmost care and accuracy.

Structural steel detailing is usually done with the help of
computers and special software like AutoCAD or other computer aided drafting
and computer aided drafting applications and software.  You can also view your drawings in 3D, or
have your software render it in 3D.

Structural steel detailing is a very vital process, but it
is also very difficult to do.  To be a
successful detailer, you should have knowledge in geometry, trigonometry,
drafting, drawing, logic, reasoning as well as above average communication and
visualization skills in order to create accurate drawings that are delivered on
time.  You also have to possess general
working knowledge in engineering and steel fabrication.  In the United States, most structural steel
detailers in the market have only a general certification program for operating
CAD software;  while others are only
self-taught.  Structural steel detailing
is not a course that is offered in a lot of colleges.  Because of these, you would find it difficult
to find in-house personnel to do detailing projects.  You could, however, outsource your structural
steel detailing projects to companies that provide these services reliably and
cost-effectively.  This makes it very
easy to get the services of a competent structural steel detailing team that
could carry out your requirements at a fraction of the price of getting
in-house staff.
